The Mito Research Fund
Since its founding in 2012, the Mito Research Fund, based in San Diego, California, has raised more than $1 million to advance scientific research at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and to promote greater awareness of mitochondrial diseases. Established by Christina Whaley, a dedicated advocate and “mito mom,” the organization has been supported by a strong network of local families, community members, and volunteers. Through its signature events—including an annual 5K race, a comedy fundraiser, and other community-driven initiatives—the Mito Research Fund continues to make a meaningful impact in the fight against mitochondrial disease.
